Why Organic Ethical coffee is synonymous with Mexico?
The need for organic coffee producers is on the rise, consumers are becoming more educated in their buying powers and its effects globally. Not only does organic and ethically grown coffee benefit the soil, ecosystems, human health and habitats in which it is grown, it just tastes better! Organic coffee reaps more health and nutrition benefits.
Alongside the rise for this demand Mexico is winning! Why is that? A study by Constant Market Share (CMS) and Coffee science (1) shows us that Mexico is in the lead for these ethical growing practices. Brazil on the contrary would be at the bottom of that list. Therefore in the rise of demand for Organic coffee, Mexico is reaping the benefits. Small farm growers, families, bird habitats and the economy of Mexico is saying yes! You may not know this, but Mexico has a wide range of resources to share with the world and the current president AMLO, and his cabinet, have been working hard to get the country out of debt and the power back in the hands of the people. Foreign industries have unjustly plumaged Mexico’s resources since the dawn of the conquistador over 500 years ago. The story is not foreign to us in the USA with its historic lines carving many of the same stories.
Pluma de Hidalgo, Oaxaca Mexico
We are in a pivotal time for this country, seeing it come out of age long debt from NAFTA agreements and many corrupt political sources. This is not to say that the corruption has ended in Mexico or many parts of the world. It will always be a force at large to keep a close eye on. However, we can see a change coming that the people have long been praying for.
For families to have access to clean water, food, to make economic gains from their own farms, for indigenous to have sovereignty and communal say of land management, flora and fauna being deemed protected areas, access to trash disposal, school access (Esp in rural areas). Coffee can have an impact on all of these key subjects in Mexico, why? Because it is generating an income that is coming in the form of a practice that is ethical for the humans working on the farms as well as the water and ecosystems as a whole that they are grown in. It is not the entire solution, but it is a start. There are many reasons to buy Ethically grown coffee and one is to support our neighbor and sister country Mexico!
